German tax and social security in 2026, without the jargon wall

The BMF tax formula and 2026 social insurance ceilings sit under every result: net income, pensioner tax exemptions, and after-tax investment growth.

Einkommensteuer zones and Sozialabgaben

The 2026 tariff runs: €0 tax to €12,348, a progressive 14%-24% zone to €17,005, a 24%-42% zone to €69,879, flat 42% to €277,825, and 45% beyond. Social contributions stack on top: pension insurance 18.6%, health insurance 14.6% plus the fund's Zusatzbeitrag, care insurance 3.4%, and unemployment insurance 2.6%, each split with the employer and capped at the €101,400 contribution ceiling for pension and unemployment insurance.

Retirement rules: KVdR, Aktivrente, and new vehicles

The KVdR 9/10 rule decides whether a retiree gets statutory health insurance as a pensioner: you need statutory coverage for 90% of the second half of your working life, with 3 years credited per child. Getting this wrong costs hundreds of euros a month for decades. Alongside it, 2026 adds the Aktivrente exemption for working pensioners, and 2027 is slated to bring the Altersvorsorgedepot with €540 base plus €300 per child in annual subsidies.

Investment taxation and the Sparer-Pauschbetrag

After-tax growth math deducts 26.375% from each year's taxable investment income above the €1,000/€2,000 allowance. For equity funds, the Teilfreistellung exempts 30% of distributions and gains before the flat tax applies. Over long horizons the allowance and partial exemption together shift net returns enough that the calculators model them explicitly rather than applying the headline rate to everything.
